Women in Art Fair returns with a challenging programme for London Frieze Week:
Women in Art Fair returns to Mall Galleries this year to provide a prominent platform for women artists, gallerists and curators during Frieze, London’s biggest annual arts week.
"This is not about excluding men,” says fair founder Jacqueline Harvey, “It's about disrupting the established model which isn’t serving us, as it’s failing half of the artistic community: women.”
WIAF had over 2000 submissions via an Open Call for inclusion in this year’s Fair, all responding either to the theme of ‘Time for Unity’ or reflecting on the creative process: the challenges and setbacks experienced during the journey to produce a final work of art.
Work by around 100 women and those identifying as women will be installed in the East, North and West galleries, alongside booths for contemporary galleries who prioritise female artists.
A spotlight section entitled “Women’s Cycles”, curated by Virginia Damtsa, will sit at the heart of the show. Curator, art dealer, gallerist, art strategist and artist agent, Damtsa explains that the exhibition will “explore the intricate, intimate and powerful rhythms of womanhood: ‘Women's Cycles’ delves into the biological, emotional, psychological and cultural cycles that shape the female experience. From the phases of life to the flow of emotions and cyclical rhythms, this exhibition invites viewers to connect with both the universal and deeply personal aspects of womanhood.”
A high-profile talks programme will run during the fair, with speakers from around the world including Saudi Arabia’s leading female art collector, Basma Al Sulaiman; living sculpture Daniel Lismore; Chair of Sotheby’s Switzerland Caroline Lang; and India’s leading contemporary art dealer Aparajita Jain
